Lee Sullivan Contracts called upon the technical experts at Bostik when working on a major project to restore and protect arts venue Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.

The flooring contractor undertook essential weatherproofing and drainage works before turning to trusted supplier Bostik for its subfloor preparation and adhesive products, as well as its expert technical support.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS

Bostik’s team of technical experts visited the Grade I and II listed buildings to inspect the subfloors and make their recommendations on how best to apply the resilient floor coverings.

A close inspection of the floor revealed that it comprised of a chipboard base as a floating system with tongue and groove bonding. Before a smoothing compound could be applied, this would require the fixing of cracks and filling of shrinkage joints.

THE BEST PRODUCTS FOR THE JOB

Following Bostik’s recommendations, the floorlayers first had to ensure gaps within the boards were filled with a suitable resin and opted for RENO P520 EASY, a repair resin system for fixing non-structural cracks, which offers very low odours and VOC emissions. They then primed the surface by applying Bostik GRIP A936 XPRESS, a high-performance primer for non-absorbent subfloors.

This was followed by the company’s SCREEDMASTER SL C530 FLEX smoothing compound. SCREEDMASTER SL C530 FLEX is a flexible floor smoothing compound reinforced with fibre that’s suitable for smoothing and levelling sound, strong substrates where vibration and minimal thermal movement can be problematic.

It was then time to lay the flooring. The installers did this using STIX A740 MULTI BEST, Bostik’s premium solvent-free acrylic adhesive. Due to its unique formulation, the adhesive offers extremely strong wet bonding while also providing a long open time of around an hour. This meant it wasn’t a race against the clock to lay the flooring.

SUITABLE FOR HERITAGE BUILDINGS

Steve Ricketts at Lee Sullivan Contracts comments: “This historic landmark is a vibrant hub within Brighton’s local community, and we are honoured to have played our part in the complex restoration project.

“It was great to work with Bostik on this project as they provided invaluable insights and first-class subfloor preparation products.”

Harry Phillips, Area Sales Manager at Bostik, adds: “We’re proud to have worked with Steve and the team to protect and conserve the historic Grade I and Grade II listed buildings at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.  Our products are well suited for use on almost any flooring project, including heritage building projects like this one.

“Our team takes pride in offering hands-on technical support to every customer we work with, and we’re delighted to have played our part in helping Lee Sullivan Contracts complete this job to such high standards.”
